Gould Medical Group establishes tradition

On July 1, 1948, local Modesto physicians V.J. Maino, M.D., Evelyn Mayman, M.D., C.R. Maino, M.D. (all pictured at right in a 1993 photo), Harry Stewart, M.D. and J.D. Barr, M.D. formed the original Gould Medical Group (GMG, Inc.) They named the group after long-time Central Valley physician Ned B. Gould. Dr. Gould practiced medicine in the Modesto area from 1913 until the establishment of Gould Medical Group in 1948.

Modeled after Mayo

GMG, Inc. was modeled after the world-famous Mayo Clinic, where brothers Dr. C.R. Maino and Dr. V.J. Maino performed their surgical residencies. The Mayo concept, which is still in use today, involves collaborating the efforts of the primary care physician with highly-skilled specialists and the use of the latest diagnostic technology. This concept assures patient access to the very highest quality of care while maintaining an efficient organization.

Gould Medical Foundation formed

In 1986, the physicians of GMG, Inc. established the not-for-profit Gould Medical Foundation and donated all equipment and property to the new foundation. Today, with over 150 physicians, GMG, Inc. remains one of the most prominent medical groups in the Central Valley, and continues to provide medical care for patients of the Foundation.

Foundation affiliates with Sutter Health

In 1993, Gould Medical Foundation affiliated with Sutter Health, one of Northern California's largest health care organizations. This affiliation allows the Foundation to share resources and expertise with leading health care facilities across Northern California. It also allows us to continue to provide the best possible medical care near Central Valley residents' homes and places of employment. We changed our name to Sutter Gould Medical Foundation in 1997 to reflect that affiliation.

Continuing Excellence

We continue to offer innovative health care methods and trusted providers to Central Valley residents. Attesting to these quality services, the Institute for Medical Quality, a nationally recognized accrediting organization, awarded the Foundation a three-year accreditation. SGMF was the first medical foundation in the Sutter Health system to receive this award.

SGMF draws from a 50-year history of providing quality health care, and will continue to care for Central Valley residents into the future.
