MODESTO – January 20, 2010 – CENTRAL VALLEY – Three of Sutter Health’s Central Valley Region health facilities — Memorial Hospital Los Banos, Memorial Medical Center and Sutter Gould Medical Foundation — have been recognized with the California Integrated Waste Management Board’s 2009 WRAP award for their efforts to reduce the waste that goes into local landfills.
This year’s WRAP (Waste Reduction Awards Program) honorees diverted more than two million tons of materials from landfills, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and saving more than $100,000,000 in operating costs.
“The health facilities in our region are united in maintaining a philosophy of reducing waste, reusing products, recycling those items we can’t reuse, and buying recycled products,” says David P. Benn, president of the Central Valley Region. “Our facilities share best practices for reducing, reusing and recycling, and we recycle all food and paper waste. We also recycle batteries, wood pallets, cardboard, office paper, fluorescent light bulbs, pharmaceutical waste, computer components, sharps, pulse oximeter sensors and plastic.” Facilities in the region use green materials that have been produced in an environmentally friendly way for building and remodeling, and select cleaning products that don’t hurt the environment.
