CENTRAL VALLEY – August 24, 2009 – Twenty-nine students who are the children or grandchildren of employees in Sutter Health’s Central Valley region have been selected as scholarship recipients as part of the Van R. Johnson Sutter Scholars program. These scholarships represent a portion of the 233 total awards given to students heading into the 2009-2010 academic year.
Award recipients include 18 children and grandchildren of employees from Memorial Medical Center, seven from Sutter Tracy Community Hospital and four from Sutter Gould Medical Foundation. Scholarship winners received awards ranging from $1,000 to $3,000.
“Scholarship programs across the country have been affected by the national economic downturn. Some companies have even been forced to eliminate their programs altogether,” said David P. Benn, President of Sutter Health’s Central Valley Region. “Sutter Health is committed to continuing Sutter Scholars, and I’m thrilled we’ve been able to support the continuing education of so many deserving students.”
Since its inception, the Sutter Scholars program has awarded approximately 3,500 scholarships totaling more than $4.6 million to Northern California students. It is named in honor of former longtime Sutter Health CEO Van Johnson and is administered by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. Scholarships are awarded annually and amounts vary, based on need and competitive review.
Serving patients and their families in more than 100 Northern California cities and towns, Sutter Health doctors, hospitals and other health care service providers join resources and share expertise to advance health care quality and access. The Sutter Medical Network includes many of California’s top-performing, highest quality physician organizations, as measured annually by the Integrated Healthcare Organization. Sutter-affiliated hospitals are regional leaders in cardiac care, women’s and children’s services, cancer care, orthopedics and advanced patient safety technology.
