    Breast Cancer Notebook

Sutter Gould, Memorial Medical Center Breast Cancer Notebook Provides Valuable Health Information

A unique and comprehensive notebook that answers women’s questions about breast cancer and its treatments is now available online at http://cancer.sutterhealth.org.

The Breast Cancer Notebook was created by Memorial Medical Center, Sutter Gould Medical Foundation and other members of the Sutter Health network to help women make informed decisions about their care.

The Breast Cancer Notebook provides information about the benefits and disadvantages of various types of treatments and makes critical breast health information from a trusted resource available at the consumer’s fingertips. The notebook contains detailed educational material about breast cancer, treatment options and support services. Its flexible design also allows women, who are provided the notebook by their oncologist, to customize the information and even add more material, such as personal health records, so that important data can be maintained in a single folder. The notebook also addresses issues such as nutrition, exercise, sexual side effects, and how to talk to your children about breast cancer.

“Having a written resource with pertinent information regarding breast cancer that provides a way to include specific information about the individual patient's case will be very helpful,” said Dr. David Adkins, a Sutter Gould Medical Foundation Oncologist and director of Memorial Medical Center’s Cancer Services Community Outreach Program. “There is such a wealth of information available to a woman that it becomes very important to distinguish what is unique and useful to each patient. This notebook is designed to help provide that foundation.”

One out of every seven women in America will develop breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Thankfully, early diagnoses for breast cancer and advanced treatment options have dramatically improved survival rates in recent years. The Sutter Health network diagnoses nearly 2,000 breast cancer patients each year, and is a leading provider of breast cancer treatment in Northern California. In 1998, Sutter Health launched an innovative breast cancer program that has served as a model for improving early detection and treatment of breast cancer, and exceeds national averages for survival rates.
